SolarCity, Corp. is a US stock corporation headquartered in San Mateo , California , that designs, sells, installs and, if required, finances, leases and operates solar power systems. It also supplies electricity and plans, installs and operates charging stations for electric cars . The company was acquired by Tesla in 2016 .

history

It was founded in 2006 on a proposal by today's chairman Elon Musk to his cousins Lyndon Rive ( CEO ) and Peter Rive ( COO , CTO ), who run the company. Musk invested in Solar City part of the fortune he had made from the sale of his stake in PayPal to advance his vision of a greener, more solar-powered US energy supply.

At the beginning of 2013, SolarCity was the second largest US company in this field with 333 megawatts of installed solar power output (behind First Solar and ahead of E Light Wind and Solar and Quanta Power Generation ). At the end of 2013, the company had 31 offices in 14 US states. In addition to tens of thousands of homeowners, his clients include over 100 schools and universities, including Stanford University , government agencies such as the US Armed Forces and the Department of Homeland Security , and large corporations such as eBay , Intel and Walmart .

In 2015, SolarCity installed 502 megawatts, ranking third in the USA behind First Solar (1023 megawatts) and Mortenson Construction with 512 megawatts.

In 2016, SolarCity installed a system on the island of Taʻū in American Samoa to cover the electricity supply in a more environmentally friendly way, since the island previously covered its supply with diesel generators. The solar system delivers 1.4 megawatts and the energy is stored in 60 Tesla power packs with a total capacity of 6 megawatt hours.

On November 21, 2016, the company was acquired by Tesla for 2.6 billion US dollars.

According to its own statement, the company has now equipped more than 300,000 houses with solar systems.

Acquisition of the assembly system manufacturer Zep Solar

In October 2013, Solar City acquired its assembly technology supplier, Zep Solar, for $ 158 million. The company, founded in 2009, will continue to operate as an independent business unit.

Lyndon Rive explained the purchase to Bloomberg as follows:

“Without Zep it would take us two to three days to install a typical rooftop. With it we're down to a single day and it looks better on the roof. "

“Without Zep, we would need two or three days to install a typical roof-top system. One day is enough for us and it looks better on the roof. "

History of Zep Solar

Zep Solar was founded in 2009 by Jack West, Christina Manansala and Daniel Flanigan with the support of the investment company Aquillian Investments from Silicon Valley . The aim of the company was the development and production of solid and very easy to handle mounting frames and connecting elements for solar panels for all possible roof shapes or other mounting locations. A contribution to the promotion of the energy transition towards renewable energies should be made by significantly reducing installation costs. In 2013, Zep Solar produced a wide range of assembly elements and had also granted licenses to 12 manufacturers of solar modules (for frames) and solar panel manufacturers.
