Sollefteå GIF is a Swedish sports club from Sollefteå . The club is particularly known for its ski jumping department and soccer team , which played three seasons in the second-highest division . The now disbanded handball team was once in the final of the Swedish championship.

history

Sollefteå GIF was founded in 1898 and initially offered gymnastics and athletics , followed by the football department in 1905. In the 1920s a tennis - and later a handball - and towards the end of the decade boxing and table tennis departments were added. In 1934 the club first drew national attention when the handball team reached the final of the state championship. There she was defeated by the Gothenburg club Redbergslids IK .

On January 1, 2000, Sollefteå GIF split up and the individual departments formed separate sub-associations.

Soccer

The Sollefteå GIF football team, founded in 1905, separated from the club in 1917 and became part of the Sollefteå AIK . However, the separation lasted only three years and then both clubs merged. After the introduction of the league system in Sweden in the late 1920s, the team initially played in the lower class area.

At the beginning of the 1950s, the footballers at Sollefteå GIF started flying high. 1951 first champions of the fourth division, the club marched through to the second division in the following years. The second division season 1953/54 ended the climber after only three wins this season together with GIF Sundsvall and Ljunga IF on a relegation zone. With three points ahead of Domsjö IF , the club returned directly to the second division as winners of Division 3 Mellersta Norrland . Again, the stay lasted only one season, behind the relegated IFK Östersund and Sandvikens AIK , the club finished last in the table. After several places in the front of the table, it took until 1960 before the club returned to the second division as a season winner. Once again he had no chance and entered the third division with nine points.

After relegation, Sollefteå GIF initially placed in the middle table area of its third division season, but was in danger of relegation in the middle of the decade. The club occupied the last non-relegation place twice in a row, he had to relegate to the fourth division in 1967 as penultimate in the table. Here the club established itself in the following years, before it slipped into the fifth division in the late 1970s. Between 1984 and 1987, when the team survived a league reform in 1986, and again between 1994 and 1996, the club briefly returned to the fourth division. At the turn of the millennium, the club knocked again on the fourth division, but failed several times only in the promotion round.

In 2005 Sollefteå GIF survived a league reform in the fifth division, but rose to the sixth division in the following season. Due to the worse goal difference compared to the same point competitor IF Älgarna , the club missed direct promotion, but prevailed in the promotion round of the table runners-up. Also in the fifth division, the club placed second behind last year's rivals and once again made it through to the fourth division through successes in the promotion round.

athletics

The athletics department is one of the oldest in the club. The club's athletes stood out particularly at the regional level and won several titles at district championships. Members of the club also appeared at the national level and took top places at national championships.
