Salomon Alexander Hart , also Solomon, (born April 1806 in Plymouth , † June 11, 1881 in Strand, London ) was an English painter.

Life

After finishing school, Hart completed an apprenticeship with an engraver in his hometown. With the support of his teacher, Hart was later able to study at the Royal Academy of Arts and was the first Jew there. There he learned several techniques and tried them. His early works range from genre to history painting ; from charcoal sketches to copper engravings .

At the age of twenty, Hart made his debut with a portrait of his father (a miniature) in 1826 at an exhibition at the Royal Academy. In 1840 Hart was accepted as a member of the Royal Academy and in 1854 appointed professor for painting .

In 1841 Hart went on a study trip to Italy, where he stayed in Florence for a long time . While he still thematized Jewish life in all its facets in his early pictures, this changed on this trip through Italy: churches and monasteries with their treasures were now a predominant part of his work. Hart was particularly taken with the churches in Florence; u. a. the Ognissanti monastery with its paintings by Domenico Ghirlandaio .

Among the commissioned works, which make up no small part of Hart's entire oeuvre, are his regular contributions to the magazines Athenaeum and Jewish Chronicle .

The painter Salomon Alexander Hart died on June 11, 1881 at the age of 75.
