In July 2005 Celebrity Cruises and Meyer Werft signed a preliminary contract for the construction of a new class of ship. At that time, the order consisted of a ship with the option of another new build. In November 2005 the design office francisdesign from London was commissioned to design the ship class. On February 17, 2006, the shipping company finally ordered the second new building. The third new building was ordered in July 2006, followed by the order for the fourth new building in May 2007. The fifth ship in the class was ordered in February 2008.

The Solstice class drive consists of two controllable Azipods from the manufacturer ABB . The four diesel engines of the MAN Diesel & Turbo SE 14V48 / 60CR type cover the energy requirement. The ships thus reach a top speed of around 24 knots .
