history

Construction, transfer and commissioning

After a successful collaboration in the 1990s, the Celebrity Cruises shipping company and Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Emsland , signed a preliminary contract for the construction of a new cruise ship in July 2005. In November 2005 the design office "francisdesign" from London was commissioned to design the ship. After the first steel plate was cut on October 11, 2006, the actual construction phase began on March 17, 2007. A crane lifted the first of 72 construction sections into the covered dry dock II at Meyer Werft . Previously, representatives of the client and the shipyard had deposited coins on the pallets as part of the “coin ceremony” .

With her double-hulled hull , the Celebrity Solstice is the first cruise ship to comply with the regulations on damage stability that will apply from 2009, which significantly increases the safety and stability reserves in the event of a leak in the ship.

On the morning of August 4, 2008, after extensive tests had been completed, the ship was pulled out of the construction dock and relocated to the dockyard's equipment quay in order to continue the expansion after further tests.

The Ems had to be dammed for the transfer of the ship on September 28, 2008 . For this purpose, the Ems Barrage was closed one day before the overpass as part of a trial jam. In order to achieve the necessary water level above the barrage, a total of around 20 million cubic meters of water were pumped into the Ems. Because of the better maneuverability, the ship was moved stern first to Eemshaven and was supported by two tugs.

For a final inspection, the Celebrity Solstice was brought to Dock Elbe 17 of the Blohm + Voss shipyard in Hamburg from October 20 to 23, 2008 and then returned to Eemshaven, where it was handed over to the shipping company on October 24, 2008. At that time, the Celebrity Solstice was the largest and, at a cost of around 616 million euros, also the most expensive cruise ship that Meyer Werft had built to date.

commitment

Immediately after the handover ceremony, the Celebrity Solstice set sail to cross the Atlantic and arrived on November 3, 2008 in the home port of Port Everglades . She was baptized on November 14, 2008 in Fort Lauderdale by marine scientist Sharon L. Smith.

After various trips as part of the commissioning, the Celebrity Solstice set sail on November 23, 2008 for her maiden cruise to the Eastern Caribbean . Meanwhile, the ship is also sailing in the Mediterranean.

In the winter of 2012/2013, the ship was first used for cruises to Australia and New Zealand . In the summer of 2013 the Celebrity Solstice sailed Alaska , then Hawaii , the South Seas , Australia and New Zealand were visited.

Machine system and drive

power supply

The Celebrity Solstice is equipped with a diesel-electric machine system. The four medium-speed 16-cylinder 4- stroke diesel engines of the type Wärtsilä 46 can be operated with diesel fuel as well as heavy oil and are equipped with common rail injection , which greatly reduces the emission of pollutants . The motors drive three-phase generators from ABB , which generate a voltage of 11,000 volts and supply the entire ship with electrical energy.

Propulsion and maneuvering aids

The ship is propelled by two ABB -Azipod- propeller gondolas built into the stern , which can be turned through 360 ° for steering and maneuvering. There is an electric motor in each nacelle, which transmits an output of 20.5 MW (approx. 27,880 hp) directly to a fixed propeller (so-called pull propeller ) pointing forward in the direction of travel . For maneuvering in port and at low speeds are three cross beam control systems of the type Wärtsilä CT 300 installed in the bow. The systems work with controllable pitch propellers at constant speed and, in conjunction with the propeller pods in the stern, enable high maneuverability.

Renewable energies and energy saving measures

The Celebrity Solstice is equipped with a photovoltaic system on the upper deck. The total of 216 solar modules generate sufficient power to supply a large part of the lighting implemented with LEDs with electrical energy. Together with other energy-efficient systems, especially the air conditioning and ventilation systems, an optimized hull shape and an effective underwater painting, the shipyard expects an energy saving of approx. 30% compared to comparable ships.

Cabins and on-board facilities

The Celebrity Solstice has a total of 1,426 passenger cabins of various categories, 140 of which are inside and 1,286 outside. They were designed by “RTKL Associates”, while the suites were designed by “New Building & Design”. Almost all cabins are housed in the superstructure. The two “penthouse” suites on the “penthouse” deck offer, among other things, a separate living and dining area, a bedroom and a luxuriously equipped bathroom on an area of 110 square meters. The remaining 64 suites have living areas between 23 and 54 square meters. Four of the 44 “Sky” suites are designed to be handicapped accessible. The 130 “AquaClass” balcony cabins offer direct access to wellness facilities and a separate restaurant (“Blu”).

There are a total of ten different restaurants on board the Celebrity Solstice . The main restaurant "Grand Epernay" was designed by Adam Tihany and offers space for over 1,400 people on two levels. Central design elements are a so-called wine tower made of steel and glass and a chandelier with a diameter of 10 meters. Some of the other restaurants were also designed by well-known designers:

  • Tuscan Grille (design: Adam Tihany)
View of the foredeck
  • Silk Harvest (design: RTKL Associates)
  • Blu (draft: New Building & Design)
  • Murano (design: BG Studio International)
  • Bistro on Five (design: Wilson Butler Associates)
  • Café al Bacio & Gelateria (design: RTKL Associates)
  • AquaSpa Café (design: RTKL Associates)
  • Mast Grill & Bar
  • Oceanview Café and Grill (design: Adam Tihany)

The Celebrity Solstice Theater offers space for over 1,100 spectators on three levels. Together with the “Entertainment Court” on the promenade deck, it forms the ship's entertainment and show area. There are also extensive shopping opportunities in the immediate vicinity. There are a total of 18 different shops on an area of over 600 square meters on three decks.

The Celebrity Solstice is the first cruise ship in the world to have a real lawn area of 2,130 square meters with the “Lawn Club” . The facility on the upper deck was designed in collaboration with Wilson Butler Architects and implemented by horticultural architects, irrigation specialists and staff from the horticultural department at the University of Florida .

Trivia

  • During the construction of the Celebrity Solstice , 212 km of pipelines and 2,658 km of electrical cables were laid.
  • The total weight of the paint applied is approx. 320 tons.
  • For the "Lawn Club" a specially provided for the ship was lawn places bred ( Agrostis stolonifera ).
  • The Celebrity Solstice has its own glass blowing , take place in the well shows.
  • The Celebrity Solstice was named “Ship of the Year 2008” by the HANSA International Maritime Journal .
