The Celebrity Equinox is a Maltese cruise ship operated by Celebrity Cruises .

history

Shipbuilding

The Celebrity Equinox was built on behalf of the Celebrity Cruises shipping company at Meyer Werft in Papenburg as part of the shipping company's own Solstice class . Construction began with the cutting of the first steel plate on September 7, 2007. The keel was laid on August 6, 2008 and the ship was delivered on July 16, 2009. Their construction costs amounted to approximately US $ 641 million

Lawsuit from environmental organizations

So that the Celebrity Equinox could be transferred from the shipyard to the North Sea on June 29th, the Lower Saxony State Agency for Water Management, Coastal and Nature Conservation (NLWKN) issued a 2.20 meter damming of the Ems at the Gandersum barrage on June 20, 2009 for the first time in summer Storage height for 25 hours. In May 2009, environmental associations filed a lawsuit against this decision on summer traffic jams at the Oldenburg Administrative Court : 500 hectares in bird sanctuaries would be flooded, at least 1,000 young birds would drown and enclosures would be destroyed. A community of heirs withdrew their previous urgent application. The environmental associations and the shipyard agreed on a compromise.

Maiden voyage

On July 31, 2009, the ship set sail for her maiden voyage, an eight-night voyage from Southampton to Norway . The voyage around Western Europe , which started on August 8, 2009, was originally planned as a maiden voyage, but due to the early delivery, the trip to Norway took place before that.

Today's use

The Celebrity Equinox now sails between spring and autumn in the western and eastern Mediterranean , and in the winter months the western and southern Caribbean .

technical description

hull

The ship is 317.2 meters long and 36.9 meters wide. The draft of the ship, measured at 121,878 GT, is 8.3 meters. It has 17 decks , 13 of which are passenger decks . A crew of 1250 men is available to transport and supply the ship and the up to 2850 passengers. The Celebrity Equinox is powered by two controllable so-called Azipods from ABB with an output of 20.5 MW per pod drive. This means she can reach a speed of around 24 knots . Four Wärtsilä 16V46CRs are available for the energy supply, each generating 16,800 kW.

Special equipment

In order to be able to offer the passengers excursions, six tender boats are available, which can be used as lifeboats in case of distress . The twenty-four lifeboats, which are only intended for this purpose, are mounted at a height of 12 meters above the waterline, reach a maximum speed of 25 knots and can accommodate up to 150 people per boat. Before the start of the voyage, each passenger is assigned a lifeboat, which is then provided with 10 megajoules of food and 3 liters of water if the boat is fully occupied . For quick deployment in special cases, such as a man overboard case , a rescue cutter with 144 HP is also available, which can also reach up to 25 knots.
