Solvang is a city in Santa Barbara County in the US state of California with approximately 5300 inhabitants. It is not far from Santa Barbara in the Santa Ynez Valley , a coastal wine-growing region in central California.

Solvang ("Sunny Field" in Danish) was founded in 1911 by a group of Danish educators on former Spanish mission land. They built an elementary school there and later a college .

Consistently in the Danish half-timbered house style, Solvang has developed into a major tourist attraction. With Danish bakeries, restaurants and shops, the city offers a touch of Denmark in sunny California and is therefore nicknamed the “Danish Capital of America”. In addition, a number of wineries in the relatively young Santa Ynez Valley invite you to wine tasting.

On the outskirts of the city is the Santa Inés Mission, founded in 1804 as the 19th Californian mission and today a California Historical Landmark. During the 20th century the mission building was completely restored.

Solvang was one of the locations in the 2004 Oscar-winning film Sideways , which has made it even more popular.

Near Solvang is the Neverland Ranch by Michael Jackson .
