The Sacro Monte

The special nature reserve of the Sacro Monte di Varallo is an institution under public law, which is entrusted with the care of the forest area in which the Sacro Monte di Varallo is located. It was established by Law No. 12 of the Piedmont Region of March 22, 1990.

The protected area can be reached by car on the state or regional roads that connect the provinces of Biella and Novara with Varallo . From the town there is a road or a footpath that leads from Piazza Gaudenzio Ferrari to the summit. The area can also be reached by cable car.

The area belongs to the local civic administration (33% Varallo municipality, 26% charitable associations, 41% private individuals) and is its responsibility.

administration

Initially, the sanctuary was administered by the same civic authority of the pilgrimage site (Regional Law No. 30 of April 28, 1980); then management passed to the municipality of Varallo (Regional Law No. 18 of September 12, 1985).

On the basis of the agreement of April 10, 1989 between the municipality and the episcopal administration of Novara , the religious administration of the protected area is carried out by the Oblate Fathers .

The administration is located in Piazza della Basilica, “Casa Valgrana”, while the “Casa d'Adda” service center houses the information office, the parking attendant's office and the conference room, as well as a small guest house, library and herbarium . The service center is at the end of the driveway that leads to the basilica.

The guided tours - against payment - are organized by the Associazione Accompagnatori Naturalistici della Valsesia (Association of Naturalistic Guides of the Valsesia Valley) at the Tourist Office of Varallo. For schools and clubs, the protected area organizes didactic activities, film projections, lessons on ecology , natural history and history, also using the outdoor and covered picnic areas.

features

The protected area has undergone profound changes over time and has also experienced a state of partial neglect. More recently, the forest has been reconstructed, especially under the aspect of the flower component (more than four hundred species taken into account) in order to bring the appearance back to that of a Renaissance garden.

In an environment that is characterized by the presence of a predominantly alpine bird fauna , which is not particularly significant due to the strong human interference in the landscape, the presence of various tree species such as beech , box trees , yew , holly and elm should be pointed out .
