Song of Granite is an Irish - Canadian biography by Pat Collins about Irish folk musician Joe Heaney , which premiered on March 12, 2017 at the South by Southwest Film Festival .

Plot / content

The film describes the rise of Irish folk singer Joe Heaney and how his childhood in Ireland not only influenced his music but also shaped his complicated personality. Three different actors portray Heaney at various stages in his life, from childhood to the years before his death.

Biographical background

Joe Heaney ( Irish Seosamh Ó hÉanaí or Joe Éinniú ) was a folk musician from Carna, a remote village in Connemara, Galway, Ireland, who spent most of his adult life abroad, living in England, Scotland and New York City. During these stays in other countries, Heaney recorded hundreds of songs. Most of these songs told of his childhood and youth in Carna.

About this time in Carna, Heaney said he started singing at the age of five, but his shyness prevented him from singing in public. It wasn't until the age of 20 that Heaney changed his behavior. He received a scholarship to a school in Dublin and won first and second prizes in a national singing competition.

In 1949 Heaney went to London, where he worked as a construction worker, was involved in the folk music scene and made recordings with the labels Topic Records and Gael Linn . His wife, to whom he was married for six years, also died in London of tuberculosis.

In 1965, Heaney accepted an invitation from the Newport Folk Festival. After singing in Newport, he decided to move to the United States and settle in New York. Heaney later worked at various universities until his death in 1984, most recently at the University of Washington in Seattle. Every year a commemorative festival is held in his honor in Carna, called The Féile Chomórtha Joe Éinniú (in English Joe Heaney Commemorative Festival ). A biography about Heaney was written by Liam Mac Con Iomaire .

production

Staff and cast

Directed by Irish, Cork-born documentary filmmaker Pat Collins . In the script that Collins wrote with Eoghan Mac Giolla Bhríde and Sharon Whooley , he begins to tell Heaney's life story from his school days in Galway County. In his film, Collins shows how the rugged landscape of Ireland, but also local myths, fables and songs, with which he grew up in Connemara as a child, shaped his complex and fascinating personality and what personal losses Heaney, who dedicated his life to folk music, made , had to accept.

Jolm Seoighe plays Joe Heaney as a boy, Michael O'Chonfhlaola as an adult and Macdara Ó Fátharta as an older man.

Filming and publishing

Richard Kendrick acted as cameraman . The film was shot in black and white, which gives the film a timeless quality and was necessary to bridge the time between the three different phases in Heaney's life shown in the film, according to Steve Greene of IndieWire .

The film was shot in Quebec, Canada, and Connemara, County Galway, Ireland, in the area where Joe Heaney grew up. The production costs amounted to around 1.3 million euros.

The film premiered on March 12, 2017 at the South by Southwest Film Festival . From July 1, 2017, the film was presented at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival and, from July 11, 2017, as part of the Galway Film Fleadh. The film was shown at the London Film Festival and the Hamburg Film Festival in October 2017 and was shown in selected US cinemas on November 15, 2017.

Reviews

IndieWire's Steve Greene says the film's most electrifying sequence takes place in a crowded Glasgow bar, with several guests singing The Rocky Road to Dublin and The Galway Shawl . The film stages Irish folk music as a kind of mythical, oral tradition that has a transcendent effect and is greater than the individual who sings it. Greene speaks of a touching tribute to Joe Heaney , who has honored this tradition throughout his musical career.
