Songs from the Southland is the 16th album by the Dutch - Austrian blues musician Hans Theessink , which was released in 2003, five years after his last album Lifeline . In 2004 he was awarded the Amadeus Austrian Music Award for this.
backgrounds
Songs from the Southland was recorded in the summer and autumn of 2002 at the Ollersbach recording studio in Austria and consists mainly of interpretations of traditional songs from the southern states of the USA . On the album there is only one of Hans Theessink's own compositions, Rained Five Days, and John Fogerty's A Hundred And Ten In The Shade from 1997, just another more recent song.
Most of the songs performed are probably rather unknown to the non-expert audience. The exceptions are the very often covered I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry , which, in contrast to all other songs, is the only one to be assigned to country , as well as Where Did You Sleep Last Night (here: My Girl ), which is mainly due to the unplugged -Interpretation of Nirvana achieved great fame.
The instrumentation is reduced to the bare essentials, i.e. H. all interpretations are essentially limited to Hans Theessink's guitar playing and vocals (and two uses of the harmonica) with occasional support from double bass, tuba and a choir of background singers under the direction of Linda Tillery .
