Sonia Wieder-Atherton (* 1961 in San Francisco ) is an American cellist .

Life

Wieder-Atherton studied at the Conservatoire de Paris with Maurice Gendron and took masterclasses with Mstislaw Rostropovich . She continued her education at the Moscow Conservatory with Natalja Schachowskaja .

After her return in 1986 she was a winner of the Rostropovich Competition . In the following years she appeared as a soloist with major European orchestras such as the Orchester de Paris , the Orchester National de France , the Gulbenkian Orchestra Lisbon, the Luxemburg Philharmonic Orchestra and the NDR Symphony Orchestra Hanover.

Several contemporary composers have dedicated works to her, including Pascal Dusapin , Georges Aperghis , Henri Dutilleux , Wolfgang Rihm , Betsy Jolas and Ivan Fedele . As a chamber musician she worked a. a. with the pianists Imogen Cooper , Georges Pludermacher , Laurent Cabasso and Elisabeth Leonskaja and the violinists Jan Talich , Raphaël Oleg and Sylvia Marcovici .

Wieder-Atherton worked on several films as a cellist and composer and made several recordings.
