The sun terrace is around 1200 to 1400  m above sea level. A. and thus 400 to 500 m above the valley floor of the Upper Court  in Tyrol  at the foot of the Samnaun group . The municipalities of Serfaus , Fiss  and Ladis , which together form the planning association for the sun terrace, are located on it.

climate

Thanks to the inner-alpine location, protected by mountain ridges up to 3000  m high, the foehn location and the particularly favorable sun exposure , the sun terrace has a preferred climate with lots of sunshine and little precipitation. The climate allows the cultivation of grain up to an altitude of over 1400  m . It is the highest winter wheat location in North Tyrol. With the Fisser barley , a particularly robust variety was developed that spread far beyond the region.

Numerous species of birds have also been observed on the sun terrace, which thanks to the preferred climate breed at a higher altitude than is usually the case, including swifts , great tit , wagtail , whinchat , rattle warbler , red backed and goldfinch .

Communities

The three municipalities of Fiss, Ladis and Serfaus form the planning association Sonnenterrasse with 2723 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) and an area of 104.48 km², 10.3% of which is permanent settlement. The uniformly designed coats of arms of the three communities refer to the location on the sun terrace with a sun . The three municipalities are marketed as a tourist region under the name “ Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis ”.

Economy and Transport

While the very small-scale agriculture has lost importance since the middle of the 20th century and the number of farms fell from 221 in 1960 to 142 in 2010, tourism, especially in winter, has become the main branch of business. The connected Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis ski area is accessible with 70 lifts and cable cars. There are around 14,500 guest beds available, around 2.5 million overnight stays were counted in 2016, 1.6 million of them in winter.

The sun terrace is accessed from Ried im Oberinntal via the L19 Serfauser Straße, which  branches off from Reschenstraße and leads via Fiss to Serfaus. From this, the L286 Ladiser Straße branches off and leads via Ladis to Fiss, where it meets the Serfauser Straße again.
