Sonny Brown

Gerald "Sonny" Brown (* 20th April 1936 in Cincinnati , Ohio ?, †) is an American jazz - drummer , composer and music educator .

Brown attended Woodward High School and then studied at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. After serving in the US Army from 1953 to 1956, he played in the Midwest in the bands of Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson , Amos Milburn and Dinah Washington and until 1960 in various gospel groups . He was best known for his collaboration with Roland Kirk , with whom he played again and again from 1957. In 1961 he moved to New York City and worked there initially with Frank Foster , Randy Weston and Ray Bryant . 1963/64 he was in the backing band of Jon Hendricks , then a year with Kenny Burrell . In 1963/64 he appeared as a drummer at the Montreux Jazz Festival ; then he worked as a freelance musician in New York and played a. a. with Clifford Jordan , Sonny Rollins , Curtis Fuller , Coleman Hawkins , Zoot Sims , Lee Konitz , Archie Shepp and Sam Rivers . With Bill Lee , with whom he also wrote an opera, he led the New York Bass Choir from 1968 , which also included bassists Richard Davis , Lisle Atkinson , Milton Hinton , Ron Carter and Michael Fleming. In 1969 he worked on recordings by Attila Zoller and Herbie Hancock and went on a Scandinavian tour with Joe Henderson .

From 1968 to 1973 he worked as a music teacher at the Harlem YDA program, at schools in the Bronx and in 1972 in the workshops of the Jazzmobile project.
