Sophia Yvonne Young (born December 15, 1983 in St. Vincent and the Grenadines ) is a professional basketball player. She most recently played for the San Antonio Stars in the Women's National Basketball Association in the 2015 season .
Career
college
Sophia Young played for Baylor Lady Bears , the women's basketball team at Baylor University , until 2006 . In 2005 she won the NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Tournament with the Lady Bears.
Women's National Basketball Association
Young was selected fourth in the 2006 WNBA Draft by the San Antonio Silver Stars . In her first season she was always in the starting line-up of the Silver Stars and has been a key player in the Silver Stars since the first game. That season she was also elected to the Western All-Star Team. Young played a strong rookie season, but with the Silver Stars she was far from the playoffs. Before the 2007 season, the Silver Stars brought Becky Hammon , Ruth Riley , Erin Buescher and Sandora Irvin to San Antonio. Young benefited above all from the signing of Becky Hammon, which enabled Young to increase her points average from 12 to 16.8 points per game. This season she reached the playoffs with the Silver Stars where she only failed in the Western Conference Finals at the Phoenix Mercury . Young played the most successful season as a team in 2008 . In this they reached the WNBA finals with the Silver Stars, but were clearly subject to the Detroit Shock . In the 2009 season, Sophia Young achieved the highest point average of her WNBA career with 18.2. But as in the following seasons, the season ends in the first round of the playoffs. In the 2013 season, Young and her team missed the playoffs for the first time since their debut season. After the team's name change to San Antonio Stars before the 2014 season , nothing changes in the team's success. The seasons continued to end before or in the first round of the playoffs. For the first time in her career, Sophia Young was no longer in the team's starting line-up. After the 2015 season she is the player who has played or scored the most games and points for the San Antonio team. In the 2016 season , she played no games in the WNBA.
Up to this point she played in 10 WNBA seasons in the regular season 301 games, she was 282 times in the starting lineup and scored 4300 points, 1807 rebounds and 554 assists. In 26 playoff games (24 of them in the starting line-up) she scored 456 points, 169 rebounds and 47 assists.
Europe
During the WNBA season break, Young, like many WNBA players, played regularly in Europe. Since 2006 she has been there for teams from the Czech Republic, Turkey and Italy. Most recently she played for Cras Basket Taranto in Italy in the 2010/11 season .
National team
At the beginning of her career, Young also played for the national team of her native country. Due to the weaker teammates, she could not achieve any major success there.
