History and architecture

The church was built in 1888 in neo-Gothic style on an old market square in the city based on a design by GA Dahl . The church tower reaches a height of 72 meters. The name of the church goes back to Sophia von Nassau , Queen of Sweden at the time of construction.

An extensive renovation took place in the 1950s, with the interior of the church being designed with light colors. The exterior facades were renovated in the summer of 2000, and the interior was renovated again in 2005. The lighting has also been revised.

On the altar there is a crucifix made by the sculptor KJ Dyfverman . A second altar has been located in an arm of the cross since 2005, in which the main service is celebrated on Sundays. In the choir windows there are stained glass , designed by Franz Xaver Zettler in 1890 and renovated in 2001 , showing Peter and Paul on the left, ears of wheat, grapes, bread and wine in the middle as symbols for the Last Supper, and Moses and Elias in the right window. A Via Dolorosa represents the Way of the Cross to Golgata on fourteen pictures, acquired in Rome in 1969, distributed throughout the church. Two icons made by Gertrud Lindholm from Oskarshamn , which depict Jesus and Peter, date from 2003 .

In the church there is the Sankt Peder chapel . Its name refers to a chapel of the same name, which was built in the 12th century.
