The Mother Teresa Cathedral ( Albanian  Katedralja e së Lumes Nënë Tereza ) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in the Kosovar capital Pristina . It is co- cathedral of the Prizren-Pristina diocese .

history

The former President of Kosovo, Ibrahim Rugova , initiated the construction of the church . The foundation stone was laid on August 26, 2003, but construction only began on September 5, 2007. In 2010, the consecration service was celebrated, in which numerous politicians and clergy from the country took part. The cathedral got its name in honor of Mother Teresa . In 2015, the construction work was expected to be completed, but it could not be met. On September 3, 2017, the cathedral was consecrated by Cardinal Ernest Simoni . The occasion was the 20th anniversary of the death (September 5th) and the first anniversary of the canonization (September 4th) of Mother Teresa, the patroness of the Church. (English)

The residence of the Kosovar bishop was built right next to the cathedral.

The costs in 2010 amounted to over € 1 million, which were donated by private individuals. In January 2016, the New York Congressman of Albanian origin Joseph J. DioGuardi organized an event at which the Albanian diaspora in the USA donated US $ 1.3 million for the cathedral. The Muslim-Albanian businessman Jim Xhema alone donated a sum of US $ 100,000.

Voices were raised among Kosovar Muslims to build a new large mosque next to the cathedral as a symbol of religious harmony . Because to this day the Muslims in Pristina do not have their own large mosque. Most date from the Ottoman period and there has long been a lack of space in the prayer halls. The controversial debate about the planning of such a mosque has escalated several times in protest actions by Muslims praying on the streets. Again and again the police had to intervene and disperse the crowd.
