Sophie Watillon

Sophie Watillon (born December 7, 1965 in Namur ; † August 31, 2005 there ) was a Belgian gambist .

Life

Sophie Watillon was the daughter of a music-loving family of notaries, in whose environment baroque house music on original instruments was an integral part from an early age. With an experience of around 200 concerts, which she had given to the existing seven family members baroque ensemble, Watillon began at the age of 16 years, the university degree in viola da gamba with Philippe Pierlot , then she studied with Wieland Kuijken and the Cantorum Schola with Paolo Pandolfo . As a student, she was a member of the “Ricercar Consort” of her first teacher, Philippe Pierlot.

During her solo career she was a permanent member of Jordi Savall's ensembles such as Hesperion XXI , “La Capella Reial de Catalunya” and “Le Concert des Nations”. She also appeared regularly with the Cantus Köln , the “Poème Harmonique”, the “Huelgas Ensemble” under Paul Van Nevel and the “Ricercar Consort”, to name but a few.

She was also open to modern music and gave premieres of works for viol , some of which were dedicated to her, by Bernard Foccroulle , Pierre Bartholomée , Arvo Pärt and others.

In the last years of her life, she was professor of viola da gamba at the Escola Superior de Musica de Catalunya in Barcelona , and she also led the renowned viola da gamba class at the Conservatory in the Brussels suburb of Woluwé-Saint-Pierre .
