Life

Sophie was a daughter of Margrave Friedrich the Elder of Brandenburg-Ansbach and Bayreuth (1460-1536) from his marriage to Sophia of Poland (1464-1512), daughter of King Casimir IV of Poland .

On November 24, 1518, she married the Silesian Duke Friedrich II of Liegnitz (1480–1547). He had the Piast Castle built in Liegnitz at the beginning of the 16th century; the Renaissance portal at the main entrance is adorned with busts of Sophie and Friedrich. The couple is also shown in a window in the Church of Our Lady in Liegnitz.

Sophie should not be confused with her niece of the same name (1535–1587), who was also Duchess of Liegnitz.

progeny

From their marriage, Sophie had the following children:

⚭ 1538 Princess Katharina of Mecklenburg (1518–1581)
⚭ 1545 Princess Barbara of Brandenburg (1527–1595)
⚭ 1545 Elector Johann Georg von Brandenburg (1525–1598)
