Sophie von Weichselburg

Sophie von Weichselburg (also: von Weichselberg / Višnja Gora , * around 1190; † February 28, 1256 in Admont ) was Countess von Stein ( Kamnik in Upper Carniola ) and Margravine of Istria - Carniola .

Sophie was the daughter of Count Albert von Weichselburg († 1209). As the last of her house, she brought the rich estates of her ancestors in the Windischen Mark into the marriage with her husband, Heinrich von Andechs-Dießen , Margrave of Istria-Krain.

Margrave Heinrich was played badly by the Wittelsbachers in 1208 in the context of the murder of King Philip . He was ostracized, could not regain his position and property after rehabilitation and died in Windischgraz ( Slovenj Gradec ) in 1228 .

Since his marriage had remained childless, his inheritance fell to his brothers. The Weichselburg inheritance, on the other hand, remained with Sophie, who, however, now felt called to live in the monastery.

Duke Otto I von Andechs- Meranien , one of the brothers of her deceased husband, seized the opportunity and bought the Weichselburg goods from her. From the purchase price she donated 300 pounds Augsburg pfennigs to the Dießen monastery , a good part of the rest must have gone to the Admont monastery , where she wanted to spend the rest of her life and died in 1256. Her grave is in the Parakeet Monastery , the home of her fathers.
