Heinrich (Istria)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heinrich ( Heinrich IV. , Heinrich II. ) (* Around 1175; † July 18, 1228 in Windischgraz ) from the house of Andechs was Margrave of Istria - Krain (1204-1228) and Count von Stein ( Kamnik in Oberkrain ).

Heinrich was the second son of Duke Berthold IV of Andechs - Meranien († 1204) and of Agnes von Rochlitz († 1195), daughter of Margrave Dedo V the Feisten of the Ostmark- Niederlausitz from the House of Wettin .

After the death of his father in 1204, Heinrich took over the margrave dignity of Istria-Carniola and the properties south of the Danube . In Istria itself the Republic of Venice made life difficult for him , which in fact ruled the peninsula.

In 1207, earlier, Heinrich married Sophie , the heir to Count Albert von Weichselburg , who gave the Andechs huge estates in the Windischen Mark . The marriage should be childless.

In 1208 he had the misfortune of being in the wrong place at the wrong time: He was allegedly involved in the murder of King Philip of Swabia at the wedding of his brother Otto in Bamberg , from today's perspective a probable problem of the Wittelsbachers , but which caused the rapid decline of the House of Andechs loyal to the convention center . In 1208 Heinrich and his brother Ekbert († 1237), Bishop of Bamberg , lost all property, all rights, dignities and income, in 1209 they were ostracized and had to go to safety with their sister Gertrud , Queen of Hungary .

In 1211 Ekbert was able to return to his office and Heinrich was able to reside in his property in Windischgraz again in the same year; his Bavarian and Tyrolean goods were lost to him. He was in contact with Aquileia - his brother Berthold was patriarch there from 1218 to 1251 - and the Austro-Styrian Duke Leopold VI. , but mainly as a privateer he was restricted to his and Sophie's possessions in what would later become Lower Styria and Carniola . In 1220 he was still “allowed” to take part as a witness in the confirmation of the award of his former margraviate to Berthold.

In May 1228 a compromise was reached between Heinrich and the Wittelsbach Bavarian Duke Ludwig , who had appropriated most of his goods, and Heinrich was given back part of his possessions and rights, but in July he died in Windischgraz. He is buried in the Dießen monastery. His brother Otto inherited his old Bavarian possessions, but the Weichselburg lands remained briefly with Sophie .
