Spaarndam is a village in the province of North Holland . It is located on the Spaarne , which forms the border between the municipalities of Haarlem and Haarlemmermeer within the village .

history

Spaarndam was built on a dike that Count Florens V of Holland had built in 1285 at the mouth of the Spaarne in the IJ . The IJdijk was at times the only land connection between Haarlem and Amsterdam . The inhabitants lived from road tolls and fishing . Between 1812 and 1927 Spaarndam was an independent municipality. Due to polders and the growing population in the Randstad , the place expanded in the 19th and 20th centuries, especially in the east and south. Today, it is mainly commuters who live in Spaarndam . Spaarndam is also a popular destination.

Attractions

In Spaarndam-West, the historical site, which was one of the first to be protected in the Netherlands, has largely been preserved. Here you will find the old church ( Oude Kerk ), which was rebuilt after a storm in 1627 , the picturesque harbor de Westkolk , an old lock system and a traditional eel smokehouse . Outside the original village core there are two forts and other defenses of the position of Amsterdam . On the IJdeich, a statue shows the figure Hansje Brinker, who comes from American literature, sealing a hole in the dike. The statue erected by the Dutch tourism association VVV symbolizes the long and arduous struggle of the Dutch people against the water.
