The sparse elephant ( Inula spiraeifolia ) is a species of the genus Alante ( Inula ) within the sunflower family (Asteraceae).

Vegetative characteristics
The chunky elephant is a perennial, sparsely hairy herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 30 to 80 centimeters. Subterranean runners are formed. With a length of 3 to 5 centimeters and a width of 1 to 2 centimeters, the middle leaves are oblong-elliptical, barely encompassing the stems and serrated, and on the top they are clearly veined.
Generative characteristics
The flowering period extends from June to August. In a total inflorescence there are usually three to ten cup-shaped partial inflorescences. The cups are 25-35 millimeters wide, the outer bracts are ovate-spatulate with a curved tip.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16.
Occurrence
The sparse elephant occurs in southern France and from Italy to Bulgaria in dry oak bushes. The distribution area includes the countries France, Corsica, Italy, Switzerland, Croatia, Slovenia, the Balkan Peninsula, Hungary, Bulgaria and Turkey.
Taxonomy
The Sparrige Alant was created by Carl von Linné in Syst. Nat., Ed. 10: 1219, first described in 1759 as Inula spiraeifolia . A synonym is Inula squarrosa L.

The chunky elephant is rarely used as an ornamental plant.
