The spear heron is a medium-sized heron with a body length of about 70 cm. For a heron it has very short legs, but an extremely long beak. This shape makes it unmistakable. The neck and body are maroon, the wings green. Adult birds have black to dark brown feathers on the head and back of the neck. A long, silvery-white feather protrudes from the top of the neck. The beak and legs are yellowish.

Occurrence

It is a resident bird and occurs from Central America to Brazil and Peru . It inhabits forests rich in water and tree-lined swamps . However, it is rare in its area of ​​distribution.
