The Hintere Hütte Speichersee is a reservoir located at 2055  m in Arosa in the Swiss canton of Graubünden . In contrast to the Arosa reservoir , it is not used to generate electricity , but for artificial snow- making on the ski slopes . It is operated by the Arosa Bergbahnen .

Location and description

The eleven meter deep Hintere Hütte Speichersee has existed since 2009 and is located between the Weisshorn and Tschuggen above the Hinter Hütte . It is basin-shaped and has a storage volume of around 60,000 m³. It is filled with water from the overflow of the "Auf den Wiesen" reservoir of the Arosa water supply. A pump line pumps the water into the reservoir , which is about 135 m higher.

History of origin

In order to ensure that the Arosa ski area is guaranteed to have snow, the sovereign of the municipality of Arosa approved the expansion of the general "snowmaking" plan on June 5, 2005. The expansion of the snowmaking systems of the Arosa Bergbahnen planned at that time included the expansion of the approved snowmaking area from 23.55 ha to approx. 53.5 ha and the construction of a storage lake on Schönboden , between the Hörnli and Schwellisee , with a storage volume of 49,000 m³ . However, after unfavorable results from the detailed geological analyzes, the risk for the construction of the lake at this location was considered to be too high, which is why a new location evaluation had to be carried out. From the approved general development plan 2004, only the small snow-making section of the Carmenna Mitte piste with an area of around 3.15 hectares was initially implemented in autumn 2006 so that artificial snow-making on the competition slopes for the 2007 snowboard world championship could be ensured.

In the summer of 2007, the new location for the reservoir was determined; this came to lie on land owned by the civil parish of Chur . The new project was formally approved in the poll on February 24, 2008. The relevant building permit was issued in June 2008. Construction work began immediately afterwards, so that part of the expanded pipeline network could be used for artificial snow-making in winter 2008/2009. The reservoir lake was completed in summer 2009 and commissioned in winter 2009/2010. The total cost of the expansion project was CHF 15 million . With this third stage of expansion of the Aroser snow-making systems, the proportion of artificially snowed slopes in the snow sports area increased from approx. 20% to 45%.

Technical

The control building of the reservoir on Arlenwaldstrasse

A lime-stabilized excavation forms the subsoil of the lake. To ensure that the pool is watertight, around 15,500 m² of light gray colored, special FPO plastic sealing sheeting was laid on the inside . Their thickness is 2.3 mm, which should ensure a service life of at least 10 years.

Leisure, tourism, sport

Despite its location on the well-frequented Arlenwaldstrasse to the Carmenna and Hörnlihütte , the reservoir is not approved for leisure and sport. In summer, however, with its sheltered beach seats set up on the shore, it serves as a vantage point of the Arosa Dolomites and can be circled on a wide path.
