The city of Speightstown in the Parish Saint Peter is the second largest city in the Caribbean island state of Barbados . The place is located on the west coast of the island and is about 19 km north of the capital Bridgetown and about 25 km northeast of Grantley Adams International Airport . Speightstown today has 2,192 inhabitants.

history

The city was founded by the British in 1630. The city name can be traced back to William Speight, an early settler and former land owner of what is now the city area. In the 17th century the port of Speightstown was of particular importance, merchant ships loaded with sugar and other goods frequented London and Bristol in England . During this time Speightstown was also called Little Bristol .

Speightstown is connected to the capital Bridgetown via the coastal roads Highway 1B + 1 , the length of this route is approx. 20 km. There are regular buses to all parts of Barbados from the Speightstown Terminal. The fare for all routes is 2.00 BBD .

The French - American actress Claudette Colbert spent the last years of her life in Speightstown, where she also died on July 30, 1996.
