The Sphinx ( Norwegian Sfinks ) is an 1850 m high, elongated mountain with north-south orientation over a length of 10 km in the East Antarctic Queen Maud Land . It rises 8 km east of the northwestern island in the Wohlthatmassiv .
It was discovered during the German Antarctic Expedition in 1938/39 under the direction of polar explorer Alfred Ritscher , who named the elevation at the northern end of the mountain as the Sphinx's head . The name of the mountain described here was made by participants in the Third Norwegian Antarctic Expedition (1956–1960), which was ultimately also adopted by participants in a Soviet Antarctic expedition (1960–1961).
