Spiegelburg (Lower Saxony)
Spiegelburg

The Spiegelburg was a small medieval hilltop castle near Hann. Münden in southern Lower Saxony . Their remains are in the Kaufunger Wald south of the Laubach district on a wooded hill that drops off steeply to the Werra .

The complex consisted of a main castle on a square area of about 30 × 30 m. With comparable fortifications, the residential buildings of the noble residents were usually located in this area. The Spiegelburg also had an outer bailey . Such systems regularly took on the servants, stables and auxiliary buildings. The castle site can be recognized by the platform-like terrain that is surrounded by shallow ditches and ramparts. Traces of buildings or walls have only been preserved through a few stone remains. Because of the small amount of stone left at the castle site, there is a possibility that it was largely made of wood.

Archaeological finds suggest that the fortifications were built and used in the 12th to 14th centuries. Although no written sources of the tradition of the castle complex have been known so far, the name Spiegelburg has been handed down.

The former castle site is accessible via forest paths. A signposted path begins at a parking lot next to a hotel complex and the campsite on the Werra.
