history
For the first time, on June 17, 1764, the city council of Aachen awarded a gaming license to the widow Margarete Reumont in Komphausbadstrasse, who ran a hotel and coffee house in Maison Bouget . In 1766 the gaming license was transferred to their son Richard Reumont. After the construction of the Neue Redoute on Komphausbadstrasse from 1782 to 1786, Richard Reumont relocated gaming operations here. In what is now also known as the New Redoute , gambling was carried out until 1854, with the exception of brief interruptions during French rule. In 1854 the Prussian government finally called for the gaming operations in Aachen to be closed on the grounds that they ran counter to the principles of morality .
In addition, in the 18th century there was still a casino near the Adalbertstores , the Ketschenburg , and a so-called Vauxhall located on Beverbach , both of which were run by hotel owners from Komphausbadstrasse, Richard Reumont and Georg Dubingk. There was also a casino in the neighboring town of Burtscheid . The street name Kasinostraße still refers to its location today.
On July 2, 1976, another casino was opened in the New Kurhaus in Aachen. Before that, they drove to the casino in Spa, Belgium, 35 kilometers away . In 2002 the slot machines were outsourced to the Kapuziner Karree . In 2010, 120,000 visitors came to both venues. The casino generated 7.4 million euros and thus 1.3 million less than in the previous year in the wake of a general crisis in the industry.
In 2014 the casino operator Westspiel had two paintings by Andy Warhol auctioned at Christie's auction house in New York City, which previously belonged to the Aachen casino's furnishings. The pictures Triple Elvis and Four Marlons changed hands for a total of 151.5 million US dollars on November 12, 2014. Westspiel intends to use the proceeds to restore loss-making casinos. Minister of State for Culture Monika Grütters criticized the sale of cultural assets "in order to plug holes in the household".
On June 11, 2015, the Aachen casino moved from the new Kurhaus to the Tivoli . The vending machine branch was dissolved and integrated here.
As the reasons for the move, Westspiel cited a "shrinking" of the casino location in Aachen. A move to the Eurogress or back to the New Kurhaus at a later date is planned.
