style
Primordial continue the path taken on The Burning Season of a difficult-to-categorize mixture of Pagan Metal , Black Metal , Folk Metal and Doom Metal . The focus is on AA Nemtheanga's haunting and varied vocals as well as Ciáran MacUiliam's heavy riffs . The melancholic, hymnic or melodic pieces are usually relatively long and slow or medium tempo. The Cruel Sea is based on a traditional Irish piece, for the lyrics of The Soul Must Sleep a passage from Jean-Paul Sartre's The Disgust was used.
reception
The album was positively received by the press. Andreas Holz from vampster criticizes the lack of gripping melodies, but attests Spirit the Earth Aflame a special “solemn, melancholy atmosphere”. Allmusic's Alex Henderson praises the musicality, complexity and aggressiveness of the album; in Rock Hard it was called a “masterpiece” and an “unbelievably beautiful disc, which is interesting for everyone who likes soulfully played, anthem-like Metal [...]”.
