The to the genus of Spirochaeta ( fresh and Meerwasserspirochäten belonging) bacteria are gram-negative , and come in hydrogen sulfide-rich before waste, mud and waste water layers. Because of these habitats they are extremophile , many are therefore dependent on high temperatures, around 50 to 60 ° C and high basic pH values (8-10) and are therefore located in areas similar to Archea . Spirochaeta americana , a species of this genus that was described in 2003, is particularly adapted to extreme environmental conditions . So far, no pathogens are known. The causative agent of syphilis , Treponema pallidum , like the causative agent of Weil's disease , Leptospira icterohaemorrhagica, was previously assigned to this genus.
