The Counts of Spon (n) Eck are originally a Silesian noble family who came to Württemberg and were raised to the rank of lords there. Descendants of a daughter of the same family carry the name further; on the paternal side they are agnates of the House of Württemberg .

history

The counts of Spon (s) are eck on August 2, 1701 at the instigation of Duke Leopold Eberhard (County of Montbéliard) in the imperial counts were collected. They are named after Sponeck Castle on the Rhine , which they never lived in.

When the Duke married Anna Sabine von Hedwiger in 1695 , this marriage was not befitting . He therefore pursued her elevation to the imperial count status. With her and her children, her three brothers Georg Wilhelm (1672–1740), Johann Christian and Johann Rudolf vom Hedwiger became Counts of Sponeck . The von Hedwiger were originally a noble Silesian family.

Countess Anna Sabine was divorced from the Duke in 1714. Her son Leopold married Charlotte von Sandersleben in France . Georg Wilhelm married Anna Sophie von Bojanowska in 1698 and was district president in Mömpelgard from 1699 to 1703 . He then went back to the military and later became a Danish general. In Denmark the name changed to von Sponneck . Johann Rudolf became regional president in Mömpelgard in 1703 and founded the German line of the family.

After the Duke's death in 1721, Count Leopold tried to assert a claim to the County of Mömpelgard . The claims were rejected by the Imperial Court in 1723 and 1739.
