Scion is in the Botany obsolete term for a young plant , a seed or a branch , especially a young branch or sprout from trees .

In a figurative sense, offspring is a synonym for “ child ” or “ descendant ”. Historically, the term was mainly used for members of princely and noble families, mostly for sons , similar to " ancestral owners ", whereby the family or gender was regarded as a "tribe" according to the image. In the hunter's language, scion as a synonym for philistine (young male deer whose antlers are not yet branched) is out of date .

It is a derivation of "rung" or "sprout", which was already documented in its original and transferred meaning in the 15th century.

The term is now used colloquially or jokingly for children, including adult children. Rare is the use in more figuratively, for example for a subsidiary in relation to its parent company, one already longer active, or for a new product company .
