The spreading water crowfoot ( Ranunculus circinatus Sibth .; Syn .: Ranunculus divaricatus auct.) Is a plant species within the genus buttercup ( Ranunculus ). It is an aquatic plant that is widespread in Eurasia .

description

The spreading water crowfoot is an evergreen , perennial, herbaceous plant that develops bare stems 5 to 300 centimeters long . It is a flooding underwater plant . The leaves are distributed on the stem. The leaf lobes are arranged in one plane. The outline of the leaf blade, which is divided into hair-thin segments, is circular. They stay spread out even out of the water and do not collapse limply like the diving leaves of other water cockfoot species.

The flowers , which rise above the surface of the water, are hermaphroditic and radial symmetry . The five protruding sepals have a length of 3 to 6 millimeters. The five free white, persistent petals have a length of up to 10 millimeters and crescent-shaped nectar glands. There are usually 20 to 25 (5 to 27) stamens present. The flower base is hairy. Most of the 42 to 48 (30 to 60) nuts are long hairy and balding; the stylus sit on the side.

The flowering period extends from May to August.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16.

Occurrence

The nominate form is widespread in temperate climatic zones in Europe and Asia. In Germany, the splaying water crowfoot occurs steadily in southern and central Bavaria (excluding the Alps), scattered in northern Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, northern North Rhine-Westphalia, Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg, Lower Saxony, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein and rarely in Rhineland-Palatinate, southern North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse and Saxony. Main areas of distribution are river valleys.

The species settles here in pondweed and water lily communities of eutrophic, muddy rivers, oxbow lakes, ditches, lakes and ponds, which are rich in bases and often calcareous, and also slightly salty in coastal marshes. Acidic waters are mostly avoided. It occurs mainly in societies of the Nymphaeion association, in the land form f. terrestris Gren. & Godr. also in societies of the association Nanocyperion.
