Spy Hunter is an arcade game released by Bally Midway in 1983 . It is an action game and is a mixture of a racing game and shoot 'em up . Spy Hunter was very successful; there were many ports . A film adaptation by Paul WS Anderson is planned.
Game description
As a spy, the player has to kill as many terrorists as possible with his fictional vehicle G-6155 Interceptor (a replica of a Chevrolet Camaros ) and thus prevent them from pursuing their plans. The view is shown from a bird's eye view; the direction of travel is north and often branches out. There are two gears, but they reach a very high speed. The weapons are machine guns, rockets, an oil film and a smoke screen. You can also use the fifth button to call a supply truck that brings more weapons. Later, the vehicle can turn into a boat. The following enemy vehicles exist (with different scores in the event of destruction):
- King of the road
- Jackknife
- Executor
- Crazy bomber (helicopter)
- Barrel tipper (motorboat)
- Doctor Torpedo (motorboat)
Portings / versions
There were implementations for all common game consoles and home computers (see categories).
In 1987 there was a direct successor with Spy Hunter II as an arcade version.
Other versions were Spy Hunter: Missile Crisis 2004 (for Zodiac ), SpyHunter: Nowhere to Run 2006 for PS2 and Xbox , as well as compilations for the PSP and clones like Major Motion (1985 for Atari ST). A remake is the freeware game Highway Pursuit by Retrospec , released in 2003 .
In 1984 a pinball machine from Bally appeared for the game .
music
The catchy theme song from the US television series Peter Gunn , composed by Henry Mancini , was used as background music . The earlier versions still had James Bond music, which could no longer be used due to legal problems.
