Srimangal (circle)

The Upazila Srimangal (in English: Sreemangal ) is an Upazila in the Moulvibazar District in the Sylhet Division in northeastern Bangladesh .

The largest city in the Upazila is Srimangal .

geography

The city of Srimangal had 21,596 inhabitants at the last census. It can be reached in five hours by rail from the capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka . Srimangal is also connected by rail to the port city of Chittagong on the Bay of Bengal . There are also bus connections to the capital and other places in the country.

The Upazila Srimangal has about 230,000 inhabitants. It borders in the south on the Indian state of Tripura .

history

Archaeological finds from Kalapur about 12 km north of the city center of Srimangal were dated to the 11th century AD and are today (2012) in the museum in Calcutta in what is now West Bengal . The strong earthquake in Assam in 1897 caused great destruction and changes in the geographic conditions in the city and its surroundings.

Today's Upazila (then name: Thana) Srimangal was established in 1912 by the government of the Bengal province of the then Indian Empire . The city (municipality) was founded in 1935.

Two memorials and two mass graves, one in north and one in south Varaura, commemorate the nine-month war of independence in Bangladesh in 1971, which ended with the help of troops from the Indian Union in December of that year.

Agriculture

Srimangal is the tea capital of Bangladesh, which is grown in the nearby hills and is also refined locally in a tea processing factory. Other important agricultural products in the district include betel , rubber, potatoes, vegetables and fruits such as pineapples and citrus fruits. There is also fishing, dairy farming and cattle and poultry farming.

Religions

More than 50% of the population are Muslim. Almost 50% of the population are Hindus, while Buddhists and Christians are very small minorities.
