The Bottrop Municipal Music Association is one of the most traditional oratorio choirs in the Ruhr area . Founded in 1918 in the course of the enormous increase in the population of the mining town of Bottrop directly after the First World War , the association played a key role in shaping the demanding musical life of Bottrop in the first few decades. a. under the conductors Franz Switing and Johann Andreas Lang. In almost all ten decades he can look back on numerous concerts that were widely received with enthusiasm. The choir celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2018.

history

From around the beginning of 1917, a mixed choir was sought and put together for various public appearances. After intensive advertising by the councilor Erwin Brinkmann, these groups became the Bottrop Municipal Music Association on July 11, 1918, initially with around 155 women and almost 60 men.

The first oratorical concert of the Musikverein (and the first ever in Bottrop) was Joseph Haydn'sCreation ”, under the direction of the first conductor Franz Plantenberg. Since in the first performance on June 29, 1919 the "joyfully moved" audience was announced that Bottrop was becoming a town, which had only arrived at the administration a few days earlier, so the foundation of the music association is closely linked to the foundation of the town of Bottrop .

The music association soon proved to be an important supporter of public musical life in Bottrop, as it not only played choir concerts itself, but also organized orchestral concerts.

Franz Switing's appointment in 1922 was an extremely fortunate choice. He made the young choir ready for the festival and in 1931 attracted national attention with the performance of Paul Hindemith 's oratorioDas Unaufhörliche ”, which had only just been performed .

After the Second World War, Switing knew how to quickly bring the choir back to a high level. Participation in the “Festival of German Choral Music” in Essen in 1953 led to acclaimed concerts, including Reger's100th Psalm ” and Beethoven'sNinth ” in the finale.

Switing stayed for 42 years until his death in 1964.

His successor Hubert Reichert, General Music Director in Recklinghausen , made big concerts possible outside of Bottrop and the cooperation with the Recklinghausen Municipal Music Association, but he was not undisputed and only stayed for 7 years.

In 1972 Johann Andreas Lang became the director of the choir. He also directed the orchestra and choir of the Marl Music Community; a fruitful and long-term collaboration resulted.

After Lang's death in 1990, Friedrich Storfinger became the conductor of the Musikverein. His specialty was tracking down little-known works of oratorio literature around the world; individual premieres were thus possible. In addition to the classics of the genre, largely unknown treasures of the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Neo-Romantic periods were raised and performed at a high level. Guest performances by the choir were recently limited to the Ruhr area and the Sauerland. The cooperation with the orchestras in the region ( Folkwang Chamber Orchestra Essen , Neue Philharmonie Westfalen , Bergische Symphoniker , Bochumer Symphoniker etc.) and soloists from the numerous surrounding opera stages enabled the Bottrop Municipal Music Association to have a professional environment right from the start. The famous theater director, director and cultural politician August Everding (1928–1999) was a member of the choir for several years after graduating from high school and remained on friendly terms with him until his death.
