St-Barthélémy Church

St Barth is a parish church in Vaugines , a municipality in the French department of Vaucluse region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .

history

In 1004, the Benedictines of Psalmody Abbey acquired an area called Vallis Amata and founded the Saint-Sauveur monastery there. A chapel was built on the remains of the demolished monastery, which was expanded into a parish church with the name of St. Pierre in the 13th century . The three-bay nave , the pointed arched barrel vault and the west facade date from this time. The apse with the semi-domed vault is still preserved from the monastery . After a further renovation in the 16th century, the church was given its final name St-Barthélémy .

Over time, the church became neglected and fell into disrepair. With the broken roof and ruined floor, it was almost demolished in the 19th century. In the 1950s, it received an interior and exterior restoration and has been a protected architectural monument ( Monument historique ) since 2000 .

The altarpiece shows St. Sebastian , St. Rochus and St. Joseph with Jesus in their arms. It dates to the 17th century and is the oldest piece of furniture in the church.
