Architecture and history

The chapel was built by Jesuits in 1622 . At first it was dedicated to Ignatius of Loyola , who was canonized in 1622 . In 1773 the Jesuits were expelled and the building was initially used by the Collège Royal . After the French Revolution , it was used by the local administration. From 1815 it was used religiously again and consecrated to Saint Erasmus of Antioch , who is considered the patron saint of seafarers.

The church building is designed in the Mannerist style. The facade is characterized by flat pilasters and niches. The horizontal division is made by wide cornices . The facade is crowned by a triangular gable. A small bell tower rises on the northeast corner.

Two side chapels lead off from the nave. The choir is separated from the nave by a grid. The decoration is designed in the style of neoclassicism . In the interior of the church there are various models and pictorial representations of ships according to its function as a seafarer's church. There is also a statue of Saint Erasmus and processional crucifixes in the church.

On January 5, 1993, the church was registered as a Monument historique under the number PA00099061.
