The pre-Romanesque chapel Saint-Georges is a partially dilapidated Catholic chapel near Lunas in the Hérault department in the Occitania region of southern France .

Together with other chapels such as Chapelle Saint-Martin de Fenollar , Chapelle Saint-Jérôme d'Argelès , Chapelle Saint-Michel de Sournia , Chapelle Saint-Laurent de Moussan , Chapelle Saint-Nazaire de Roujan and Chapelle Saint-Pierre de Léneyrac in Ceyras it is a remnant of Visigoth architecture in the former Septimania , which belonged to the Visigoth Empire between 419 and 711 .

location

The chapel on the western edge of the Escandorgue is only a few hundred meters east of Lunas on the Chemin Saint-Georges path , which leads into the Ruisseau de Saint-Georges valley.

History

Gallo-Roman remains have been found near the chapel , which suggests that the site was already settled at the time.

The architectural style of the chapel is pre-Romanesque with elements of Visigoth architecture. It should therefore have been built in the fourth quarter of the 9th or the first quarter of the 10th century.

Since July 17, 1976, Saint-Georges has been designated as a Monument historique under the identification number PA00103495 . The municipality of Lunas now owns the structural remains.

architecture

The building consists of a single nave, which is closed by a slightly less wide, rectangular and slightly trapezoidal choir and into which daylight can only penetrate through very narrow window gaps. Not much has been preserved from the actual nave. The choir area is covered by a now partially collapsed barrel vault . In front of the central window opening on the straight side of the choir head is a very simple stone altar or pedestal, which is surmounted by a stone cross standing on it . The horseshoe arch connecting the two parts is supported by two marble columns, one of which is of Gallo-Roman origin. It shows similarities to the Mozarabic architectural style. These two architectural features - a rectangular choir with a straight head end and a horseshoe-shaped arch - clearly reveal the pre-Romanesque style. The natural stone masonry is generally quite coarse, only hewn stones were used on the choir arch , window openings and corners. The two fighter stones protruding into the opening are profiled.
