The Catholic Church of St-Martin in Val-Couesnon , a French parish in the Ille-et-Vilaine department in the Brittany region , was originally built in the 11th century by the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Florent near Saumur and modified in the 16th and 19th centuries .

The church dedicated to Saint Martin has been classified as a Monument historique since 1926 .

architecture

The simple nave , the transept and the choir bay with stone vaults have been preserved from the Romanesque building . The apsidioles were torn down after a fire in 1801. The crossing is bordered by arcades .

The southern and northern portal also date from the Romanesque period. The profiled archivolts rest on consoles that are decorated with human heads or masks.

A north aisle was added in the 16th century, with the arched arcades resting on thick round pillars.

Furnishing

Of the furnishings , the figures of saints from the 16th to 18th centuries are worth mentioning.

The canopy of the baroque main altar from the 18th century was classified as a monument historique in 1919 .
