St-Sixte

St-Sixte is a Romanesque chapel in the French commune of Aubignan . It was originally a parish church .

history

Traces of an old vault on the southern facade point to a missing cloister that once belonged to a monastery.

In 1775 the chapel was attached to the collegiate chapter of St-Agricol in Avignon . It was declared a national good during the French Revolution . The Seguins-Vassieux family bought it back in 1809 and services were held again from 1863.

The chapel has belonged to the Rey family since 1936, who carefully restored it and turned it into a wine cellar .

Since December 28, 1984 it has been classified as a Monument historique .

Its three-bay transept , which is set slightly higher than the apse and the nave , and its vault can be assigned to the early Provencal-Romanesque style that prevailed between the mid-11th and early 12th centuries. There is an inscription in the entrance area:

"TVNE lA (S) OME TIGE DVFARDA A (M) ASLE DAMNES."

Charles Rostaing suggested the following translation for the beginning of the text:

"The skinny donkey, because of its burden, fasts ..."

The apse window, which had been darkened and silted up for a long time, was repaired during the restoration. It shows a fresco with motifs that also occur in the Prieuré de Ganagobie , in St-André-de-Rosans and in the Abbey of Cluny : monsters, chimeras , a high rider on his mare and an animal by his side its flower-shaped tail is crossed. The theme comes from the eastern Mediterranean and suggests an emergence at the time of the First Crusade (1096-1099).
