The St. Ansgar Church is a Roman Catholic church in the Mürwik district of Flensburg . The modern church building from 1957, which was consecrated to the " Apostle of the North" Ansgar , is now a cultural monument .

It is not to be confused with the younger Danish Ansgar Kirke (German: Ansgarkirche ) in the north of Flensburg .

background

The church was built according to the architect Georg Rieve and consists of a rectangular geosteten Backsteinsaalbau on which a saddle roof rests, as well as an attached bell tower from concrete , facing south, a on the copper tower tap is. There is a colored glazed rose window on the western front above the entrance . The entrance to the church was designed in 1996 by Karl Heinz Sönnichsen and has since consisted of a small vestibule to which a four-step flight of stairs leads up.

The St. Ansgar Church has the address Ansgarstrasse 1. It is located in a small, secluded, traffic-calmed district that consists of the streets: Rote Lücke, Ansgarstrasse, Stralsunder Strasse, Gneisenauweg, Hildebrandstrasse, the eastern part of Blücherstrasse, as well the northern part of the Engelsbyer Weg. This "Ansgarviertel" consists entirely of residential developments. To the west of the quarter is Klosterholz , the old center of Mürwik. In the north is the main road Osterallee and in the south it is bordered by an allotment garden colony. In contrast to the larger Evangelical Christ Church on Fördestraße, which was built almost at the same time , the St. Ansgar Church is hidden away from the main streets of Mürwik. As a branch church of the Catholic parish of Flensburg , the St. Ansgar Church does not have its own pastor . The service is regularly celebrated on Saturday at 6.30 p.m. in the church.
