The Christ Church with the church square

The Christ Church is an Evangelical Lutheran church in the Mürwik district of the city of Flensburg in Schleswig-Holstein . The heritage-protected , modern church building , in the vicinity of which the parish hall and pastorate can be found, is located at Fördestraße 4 to 8. The center of Mürwik, the Twedter Plack , is not far from the church.

history

Originally the Mürwiker area was looked after by the municipality of Adelby and did not have its own church. - With the construction of the Mürwik Naval School , an associated garrison church was also to be built. The plans initially envisaged a large four-tower castle church on the waterfront, north of the school, which was to be enclosed by the castle wall , which was also later not expanded . However, the plans were not implemented. The school auditorium should therefore be used as a prayer room and church . In the Weimar Republic there was a lack of money. In 1932 Mürwik only got a small chapel . In the time of National Socialism , the Nazi state showed no interest in building a new garrison church of a corresponding size. After the end of the Second World War , the population of Flensburg grew rapidly. In particular, the proportion of the community in Mürwik grew considerably due to the refugees who moved there.

Side view of the church

In 1950 Mürwik finally became an independent parish. Its church building was finally erected between 1957 and 1958 near the Naval School Mürwik according to plans by the Hamburg architects Bernhard Hopp and Rudolf Jäger and was named Christ Church . The chapel is said to have been demolished soon afterwards, and the parish hall that was built in its place is still supposed to house the old buildings of the chapel.

The church consecration took place on November 2, 1958. To the construction costs of 630,000 DM , the had German Navy participated with 250,000 DM. The church functioned and has since acted as the garrison church of the Flensburg-Mürwik base . Until the 1990s, many in the community had connections to the German Navy, which was quite strongly present in the Mürwik district, which had an impact on community life. In the meantime, however, this has changed. After the German Armed Forces and the German Navy reduced their locations in the Flensburg region, including in Mürwik, the proportion of military personnel is lower today. The ecumenical St. Nicholas Chapel has also existed at the Mürwik Naval School since the beginning of 2004 . It is located next to the school auditorium , which is still used from time to time. The Protestant military dean is still involved in the Mürwiker parish of the Christ Church and also sits on the parish council of the Christ Church (see also: Gorch-Fock-Haus ). In order not to let the community grow too big, a daughter community was established with the community center Fruerlund .

Architecture and equipment

Above the entrance is the Bible quote ( Rev 11:15  LUT ), according to the Luther translation , written in stone : "The kingdoms of the world of our Lord and his Christ have become † and he will reign for ever and ever † Amen". Above it, the judging Jesus Christ (see Last Judgment ) sits enthroned on the rainbow , the symbol of the peace bond between God and man. To his left and right are two angels . One carries the cross and the other a lance . These shell limestone reliefs were created by the artist Ursula Querner .

The cross of the church in the interior is a former triumphal cross from the 16th century, which formerly hung in a late Gothic church in Wilster . Otherwise, the modern church building shows rather sparse furnishings, so there are hardly any pictures. However, the church has a more typical structure, there are pews and a church organ . In 2003 the organ was exchanged for a better one with more registers . The community letter, distributed free of charge and available on the Internet, is called Die Brücke .

The organ was built in 2003 by the organ construction company Mühleisen (Leonberg). The slider chest instrument has 30 stops on two manual works and a pedal . The playing and stop actions are mechanical.
