Gate guard of the Mürwik naval school

The gate guard of the Mürwik Naval School is located in the Flensburg - Mürwik district at the end of Kelmstrasse and is used to control the main access road to the Mürwik Naval School . Together with the watchtower and the boundary wall, it is one of the cultural monuments of the Mürwik district .

background

The Mürwik Naval School was built from 1907 to 1910. On November 10th, shortly before the inauguration of the school, the management of the naval school wrote to the new building administration: “1) The enclosure of the naval school building in its current form is completely inadequate. It is currently out of the question to prevent all kinds of light-shy rabble, dissolute women and unauthorized persons from entering. As the spruce trees grow, control becomes more and more difficult, as an increase in the number of guards is impossible due to the low staff budget. 2) Given the current state of the enclosure, it can also be taken for granted that the residents will cover their need for Christmas trees from the plantings. [...] "

Shortly afterwards, presumably in 1911/1912, the gate guard was set up on the southern property boundary near the outer bailey with the Flensburg-Mürwik naval hospital. In particular, its round watchtower shows a clear reference to the Marienburg Order Castle in the east. The pedestrian gate, next to the wide entrance gate on the street, consists of a pinnacle-crowned stepped gable masonry . The extension with the arcade passage directly behind it was added later in 1927, but it fits in completely.

The eight-meter-high watchtower is followed by a high brick wall with intermediate pillars, which is closed at the top with roof tiles , as is the case with the remnants of the Flensburg city wall in the Flensburg city center near the Nikolaikirche . However, the more elaborate roof tile design of the boundary wall in Mürwik is also based on the design of the Marienburg. The expansion of this boundary wall with a clear castle wall look is most advanced in this area of the naval school. Other planned designs for the expansion of the naval school show a continuous castle wall on the water side, which should be raised at the edge away from the water. Based on the drafts it can be assumed that the castle wall should enclose the entire area. Today, however, the rest of the area is only enclosed by transparent wire fences and visually different masonry. Garages have been located directly behind the wall at the gate guard for decades . How long the MSM garages have existed is unclear. But they existed at least in the 1950s, because they were already used by the Flensburg customs school.

Further gates of the naval school

1902 was not far from the Naval Academy, north of Swinemünder street , in the Torpedo road the gatehouse of the Torpedo Station was built, which had a slight resemblance to the "gatehouse" the Naval Academy. The barracks gate in question no longer exists today. - Nowadays, non-residents often suspect that the gateway building of the news school from the 1930s would lead directly to the naval school, but this is wrong. It does not belong to the gates of the naval school (see also gate XII).

Furthermore, the following gates of the naval school still exist today:

  • Gate I: At the marina of the Naval School towards Sonwik .
  • Gate II: At the edge of the boat harbor, on the water's edge, towards Twedter Mark .
  • Gate III and IV: At the edge of the trampoline roof warehouse to the NCO's house on Twedter Mark street.
  • Gate V: At the edge of the northwestern sports field of Marine Sports School , the so-called Agfa -Gelände.
  • Gate VI: On the edge of the south-eastern sports field of the marine sports school, main entrance to the Twedter Mark street.
  • Gate VII, VIII: Further side gates at the marine sports school on the Twedter Mark street
  • Gate IX: At the marine sports school on Fördestrasse.
  • Gate X: On Kelmstraße, access to the school parking lot. The gate is just before the gate guard (Gate XI)
  • Gate XII: Gate not far from the Marine Bridge, which leads to the news school via the Fördewald hiking trail .

The so-called water gate is also located at the boat harbor (see there ).

various

  • The gate guard is a much rarer photo opportunity than the naval school from the waterfront.
  • In the 1950s a cobbler had his cobbler's shop in the gate guard.
