The day of the Bundeswehr is similar to an open day ; In contrast to this, it has been carried out simultaneously across locations at several barracks and offices of the Bundeswehr and the Bundeswehr administration.

With this annual opening, the Bundeswehr wants to present itself, according to its own definition, both as a socially bound part of the Federal Republic and as an attractive employer. The "anchoring" in or the relationship to society should be deepened through the "personal" dialogue.

background

Open days had already been held every now and then for many years at the various Bundeswehr locations, although the focus was only on the respective location with the specific tasks there. However, the Bundeswehr, which, unlike many companies, is also present in the area with its locations, did not organize these Open Days on a nationwide uniform day.

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Bundeswehr and the 25th anniversary of the "Army of Unity", the first day of the Bundeswehr took place on June 13, 2015. Since then, this day has taken place once a year in the first half of June. The locations at which the Bundeswehr is represented change from year to year. Different units are presented at the individual locations.

The number of participants on Bundeswehr Day in 2019 was significantly fewer than the Bundeswehr had hoped for. In some places only half of the expected visitors came.

Bundeswehr Day 2020 was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

Protests on Bundeswehr Day 2016 in Bonn

On Bundeswehr Day, children's aid organizations and organizations of the peace movement criticize the fact that the Bundeswehr is trying to convince the population of military operations in order to recruit young people for military service . They call for the protection of children and young people, as Bundeswehr Day is particularly aimed at getting children and young people enthusiastic about the military in order to win them over as new recruits. It is criticized that the recruitment of under 18-year-olds is contrary to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child .

After the day of the Bundeswehr in 2016 , pictures were published showing children with G36 and P8 weapons as well as during an instruction at the information tables of the troops with an MP7 submachine gun when aiming and aiming. Sometimes they are instructed on the weapons by a soldier . With regard to the soldiers involved, the question of disciplinary measures was discussed. Thereupon the SPD defense expert Rainer Arnold said: "War weapons are not toys".
