The league was in season 2017/18 previously played as in the two seasons in two regional groups North and South. It was organized by the German Ice Hockey Federation (DEB) and formed the third highest division in German ice hockey . The season started in September 2017. At the end of the season, the two groups played a promoted player in the DEL2 in joint play-offs . The field of participants in the Oberliga Nord has been reduced by two teams from 16 to 14 teams for the current season and is to be revised up to 16 in the 2018/19 season.

Oberliga Nord

14 teams took part in the Oberliga Nord.

The ESC Wedemark Scorpions and the team of SC Langenhagen , which played as Hannover Scorpions , merged in March 2017 and played under the name Hannover Scorpions in Wedemark. FASS Berlin announced in April 2017 that it would not report the team for the 2017/18 season. There was no promoted player from the regional leagues, as all possible participants waived the relegation round.

The following clubs were athletically qualified for the Oberliga Nord:

mode

The 14 teams played a single round between September 29 and December 28, 2017. The first seven teams qualified for the championship round, the rest played in the qualifying round. Both modes were conducted as one and a half rounds. The participants in the championship round and the first in the qualifying round qualified for the major league play-offs. The last of the qualifying round was athletic relegation. For the 2018/19 season, the league should be increased to 16 teams. Athletic climbers are the champions of the regional leagues north, west and, with a suitable geographical location, east. Possible successors are the respective runners-up.

The twelve teams played a one and a half-fold round between September 29, 2017 and January 14, 2018. The first eight teams qualified for the championship round and played the placements for the major league play-offs in a single round. The remaining teams played a dovetailing round with the eight best teams in the Bayernliga under the leadership of the BEV. The four best teams from this qualified for the 2018/19 Oberliga. Furthermore, the champions of the Regionalliga Südwest and, given a suitable geographical location, the Regionalliga Ost qualified. For the 2018/19 season, the league is to be increased to 14 teams.

Toothing round

With the Lindau Islanders, the Memmingen Indians, the Löwen Waldkraiburg and the TEV Miesbach, the last four placed Oberliga-Süd in 2017/18 went into relegation for the Oberliga 2018/19 where they were - as in the 2016/17 season - Mass with the strongest teams from the Bayernliga in a dovetailing round.

Play-offs

The eight teams from the playoff lists of the Oberliga-Nord and Oberliga-Süd qualified for the play-offs. In contrast to previous years, the relays were already interlocked for the round of 16. For example, the first from the north played against the eighth from the south and vice versa. The playoffs began on March 9th, 2018. The winner of the playoffs is the German league champions 2017/18. The best-placed German club qualified for the DEL2 for the 2018/2019 season.

*)Seven seconds before the end of the game, the Rosenheim goal was deliberately postponed when the Scorpions attacked, according to the referee. After a short consultation, the "Act of shooting goal" was decided in favor of the Hanover Scorpions, who thus won the decisive game in the quarter-finals against Rosenheim.
