The Husum Schwesing Airport is a commercial airport near Husum . It emerged from part of the now inactive Husum Air Base , another part is still used by the Air Force as the location of an anti-aircraft missile group .
history
The origins of aviation in Husum go back to the early 1930s, when the Husum-Narrenthal airfield in the north of Husum was built as a civilian airfield. The Husum-Schwesing airfield, which still exists today, was laid out in 1938/1939. For the workers was near the village Schwesing a Reich Labor Service camp erected. After the labor service had withdrawn and the Luftwaffe refrained from setting up a second airfield in Husum after the occupation of Denmark and Norway , the camp temporarily served as a collection point for soldiers in 1940 and as a concentration camp in autumn 1944 . The Luftwaffe stationed in Husum-Schwesing in the further course of the Second World War, however, dummy aircraft to irritate the Allied bomber formations flying in from the North Sea .
The British Air Force of Occupation (BAFO) then began in the course of 1947 with the repair of the site in Schwesing and the establishment of a full-fledged military airfield ; however, there was no stationing of airborne RAF units.
Only after the establishment of the Bundeswehr was the airfield activated as Husum Air Base (after the nearest town ) in the border area between the communities of Schwesing and Immenstedt . This use lasted until the early 1990s. Subsequently, the south-western part of the property was outsourced and converted into civil use. This part consists of the southwestern part of the runway and part of the associated infrastructure units necessary for aviation operations (tower, hangar, runway and runways). The northeastern part of the former air base is a property of the Bundeswehr and the in Husum airfield barracks -based air defense missile group 26 used.
business
The airport is operated by Flughafen Husum GmbH & Co. KG , whose shareholders are the city of Husum , the Husum business community and other private companies and individuals. It is approved for aircraft up to 14 tons and helicopters up to 10 tons take-off weight and is mainly used by powered aircraft. To the southeast of the asphalt runway there is also a strip of grass that is only available for glider use.
particularities
A special feature is that the runway on the border between the civilian, southern part and the northern part used by the Bundeswehr is separated by a fence in the middle, with only the southern part in operation.
