The Helgoland-Düne airfield is a commercial airfield on the North Sea island of Düne near Helgoland .
Geographical location
The airfield is located in the eastern part of the small island of Dune , which is around 1 km east of the main Heligoland island and 44 km north of the East Frisian island of Wangerooge . A ferry boat that runs regularly during the day can be used to cross to the main island. The connection from the airport to the ferry terminal is made by a taxi.
history
The airfield was built at the time of the National Socialist German Reich as part of the Hummerschere project (1938 to 1941), when the German government enlarged the dune by means of sand pre-washing and washing-up in order to develop it with the main island into a fortress with a seaport . The airfield, which was mainly used as an emergency and alternative area during the Second World War (1939 to 1945), was also created. The only active flying unit of the Luftwaffe was the Helgoland Fighter Squadron (renamed 11th Squadron of Jagdgeschwader 11 ) from April to October 1943 . After the war ended, Dune and Heligoland were occupied by the United Kingdom . In 1962 the airfield was reopened.

The three runways are relatively short compared to other airfields. Runway 15/33 was extended from 400 m to 480 m in 2005 and officially opened on May 6, 2006. This means that European regulations relating to commercial air traffic with multi-engine aircraft have been met. There are no overruns .
In order to be allowed to fly to the airfield, a minimum flight experience of 100 hours as a responsible pilot and experience on short runways is required. The pilot should not fly over the main island of Helgoland if possible. The flight schedule requirement for flights to Heligoland with powered aircraft has been abolished, but flight schedules still have to be given for flights with three-axle controlled ultralight aircraft and powered gliders.
There are traffic lights and signs warning pedestrians walking through the dunes of low-level aircraft landing.

Flights to Cuxhaven / Nordholz and Heide-Büsum are carried out from Helgoland airfield , as well as to other German islands such as Wangerooge from time to time, mostly with freight or post . Only the company OFD Ostfriesischer Flugdienst flies to Helgoland in regular traffic, from Cuxhaven / Nordholz (as of October 2019).
Incidents
- On 27 May 1972, a accident de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter of the General Air with destination Bremen shortly after its launch. Eight of the thirteen inmates were killed.
- On March 24, 1974 there was an unauthorized touchdown and go-around maneuver ( balked landing ) of a Boeing 737-200 of Deutsche Lufthansa , which was on an empty flight over the North Sea. The maneuver was observed and photographed by several spa guests.
