St. Bernard Chapel

The St. Bernard Chapel is a monument registered chapel in the district Merreter of Mönchengladbach ( Nordrhein-Westfalen ). It was built at the end of the 19th century and was entered on June 2, 1987 under no. M 023 in the monuments list of the city of Mönchengladbach .

location

The chapel is at a fork in the road in the Merreter settlement on the street of the same name and is number 36.

architecture

The small, almost east- facing brick chapel with a three-sided end of the choir stands at the junction of a farm road . It has a brick covering with slate ridges (Strackorte). The choir polygon is covered with old German slate roofing, on the gable there are slate-clad windboards . The slate-covered roof turret is crowned by a cross and holds a small bell .

The entrance is a slightly arched, renewed wooden door in the west gable with a niche above to accommodate a sculpture of St. Bernhard . The gable is decorated with Dutch triangles , the end of the gable is formed by bricks that are walled up at an angle . There is an arched window on each of the eaves , the window frames have been renewed without bars. A plastered plinth surrounds the building. Inside, a wooden shallow barrel has been preserved as a ceiling . A wooden crucifix with a painted body from around 1700 adorns the altar .
