St. Jacobus Church in Zirchow

The St. Jacobus Church in Zirchow in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district is the oldest preserved church building on the island of Usedom .

The rectangular nave , made of field stones , dates from the second half of the 13th century. The east gable with two narrow arched windows was later renewed. The reveals of the windows and the portal are made of brick . They were changed during a renovation in the 19th century.

The square west tower was added in the 15th century and has an octagonal baroque hood with a pointed helmet . The belfry reaches down to the foundation of the tower and is connected by several St. Andrew's crosses . There are various pointed arches on the base of the tower. The ogival west portal is stepped four times.

In earlier times the church served as a refuge in the event of raids. In addition to the 1.10 m thick walls, holes in the inner walls of the portals testify to this. Here the doors could be barricaded with inserted bars.

Inside the church has a flat wooden beam ceiling. Remnants of medieval paintings were uncovered under the plaster. The interior is from the 17th and especially the 18th century. The barriers of the altar and the pulpit were built around 1850. The altar painting shows Jesus Christ as the Man of Sorrows .

The organ was installed in 1867 by the Szczecin organ builder Kaltschmidt . The bell was cast by the Schwenn brothers in Stettin in 1820.

The painter Lyonel Feininger visited Zirchow several times in the early 20th century. The Zirchow Church became the subject of a number of his paintings, of which the painting "Zirchow V" is in the possession of the Brooklyn Museum in New York City .
